“กำฟ้า” เป็นประเพณีของชาวไทยพวน ที่มีมาตั้งแต่โบราณ “กำ” ในภาษาไทยพวน หมายถึง การนับถือและสักการะบูชา ดังนั้น กำฟ้า จึงหมายถึงประเพณีนับถือ สักการะบูชาฟ้า เนื่องจากชาวพวนเป็นกลุ่มชนที่ประกอบอาชีพทางการเกษตรการทำนาต้องอาศัยน้ำฝนจากธรรมชาติ ชาวนาในสมัยนั้นจึงมีการเกรงกลัวฟ้ามาก ไม่กล้าที่จะทำอะไรให้ฟ้าพิโรธ ถ้าฟ้าพิโรธย่อมหมายถึง ความแห้งแล้ง อดยาก หรือฟ้าอาจผ่าคนตาย ประชาชนกลัวจะได้รับความทุกข์ยากอันเป็นภัยจากฟ้า จึงมีการเซ่นสรวง สักการะบูชาผีฟ้าเพื่อเป็นการประจบผีฟ้าเพื่อไม่ใ ห้พิโรธ และเป็นการแสดงความขอบคุณต่อเทพยาดาแห่งท้องฟ้าหรือผีฟ้า
