อำเภอนาจะหลวย ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออ

อำเภอนาจะหลวย ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี เป็นอำเภอชายแดน ติดต่อกับสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว โดยมีเทือกเขาพนนมดงรักเป็นเส้นกันเขตแดน
"นา" หมายถึงพื้นที่ทำเล เมื่อรวมคำว่า"นาจะหลวย"จึงมีความหมายว่า ทำเลของกระจ้อน ซึ่งบ่งบอกและแสดงให้เห็นถึงความอุดมสมบูรณ์ด้านการเกษตรและทรัพยากรธรรมชาติของอำเภอนาจะหลวย
คำว่า “จะหลวย” มาจากภาษาส่วย(ภาษาประจำถิ่น) แปลว่า “กระจ้อน” ซึ่งเป็นสัตว์สัญลักษณ์ของอำเภอนาจะหลวย โดยจะมีลักษณะกล้ายกับกระรอก
อำเภอนาจะหลวยเดิมเป็นตำบลหนึ่งของอำเภอเดชอุดม ต่อมาได้รับการยกฐานะขึ้น เป็นอำเภอเมื่อวันที่ ๑๓ เมษายน ๒๕๒๐
เป็นชุมชนที่อยู่ของชาวสี่เผ่า ประกอบด้วยไทย ลาว เขมร และส่วย ตั้งถิ่นฐานในพื้นที่เริ่มตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่นั้นไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานแน่ชัด ราษฎรประกอบอาชีพด้านการเกษตร หาของป่า นับถือศาสนาพุทธ รวมทั้งการเชื่อถือภูตผีเจ้าป่าเจ้าเขา

ปัจจุบัน ร้อยละ ๘๐ ของประชากรเป็นราษฎรที่อพยพมาจากพื้นที่ต่างๆ เช่น จากจังหวัดศรีสะเกษ จังหวัดอำนาจเจริญ อำเภอพิบูลมังสาหาร และอำเภอเดชอุดม จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี
ในอดีตเป็นพื้นที่การสู้รบของรัฐบาลกับผู้ก่อการร้ายคอมมิวนิสต์ ซึ่งส่งผลต่อความเป็นอยู่ของราษฎรในปัจจุบัน
