มาร์ดิกราส์ เป็นเทศกาลสำคัญที่ชาวนิวออร์ลีนส์เฉลิมฉลองทุกๆ ปี โดยงานนี้จะจัดในวันอังคารก่อนวันที่ชาวคริสเตียนเริ่มถือศีลอด ซึ่งการถือศีลนี้จะกินเวลาไปจนถึงวันอีสเตอร์ (ซึ่งตรงกับวันอาทิตย์) มาร์ดิกราส์ เป็นภาษาฝรั่งเศสแปลว่า Fat Tuesday เนื่องจากเป็นวันที่ผู้คนจะกินเนื้อและอาหารอ้วนๆ เป็นวันสุดท้ายก่อนที่จะเริ่มศีลอด
ปัจจุบัน เทศกาลมาร์ดิกราส์ที่นิวออร์ลีนส์นั้นเป็นเทศกาลเฉลิมฉลองรื่นเริงที่ดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วโลก คลับต่างๆ ในเมืองที่เรียกกันว่า (krewe) ต่างก็ส่งขบวนพาเหรดหรูหราและจัดงานเต้นรำสวมหน้ากากเป็นเวลาหลายสัปดาห์ก่อนถึงวันงาน มีการโยนสร้อยลูกปัดจากขบวนรถพาเหรดให้ผู้ชมข้างทางเป็นที่สนุกสนาน โดยรถพาเหรดแต่ละคันจะมีพระราชาและพระราชินีสวมหน้ากากซึ่งจะไม่เปิดเผยว่าเป็นใครจนกว่าจะถึงงานเต้นรำ สีประจำเทศกาลมาร์ดิกราส์มี 3 สี คือสีม่วง หมายถึงความยุติธรรม สีเขียวหมายถึงความศรัทธา และสีทองหมายถึงพลัง
