ประวัติความเป็นมา
วัดสระเกศ ตั้งอยู่ริมคลองมหานาค เขตป้อมปราบศัตรูพ่าย เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นโท ชนิดราชวรมหาวิหาร สร้างในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา เดิมชื่อ "วัดสระแก" รัชกาลที่ 1 ทรงปฏิสังขรณ์ขึ้นใหม่ และพระราชทานนามว่า "วัดสระเกศ" ส่วนพระบรมบรรพต ซึ่งเรียกกันทั่วไปว่า "ภูเขาทอง" นั้น เริ่มสร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 โดยจำลองแบบมาจากพระเจดีย์ของวัดภูเขาทองในจังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา แต่เนื่องจากพื้นดินในบริเวณนั้นลุ่ม ดินจึงอ่อน รับน้ำหนักพระเจดีย์ไม่ไหว จึงทรุดลงจำต้องหยุดสร้าง ต่อมาในรัชกาลที่ 4 ทรงโปรดเกล้าให้ทำการสร้างต่อ แต่ก็มีการซ่อมตลอดรัชกาลจนมาสำเร็จลงในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ใช้เวลาการสร้างถึง 3 รัชกาลด้วยกัน เป็นเวลาประมาณ 50 ปี
พระบรมบรรพตภูเขาทองนี้มีความสูงประมาณ 100 เมตร บนยอดสุวรรณบรรพตเป็นที่ตั้งของพระเจดีย์ซึ่งบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ที่อัญเชิญมาจากเมืองกบิลพัสดุ์ ประเทศอินเดีย พระบรมบรรพตภูเขาทองจัดเป็นหนึ่งในสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวที่สำคัญ ไม่เพียงแต่ในเมืองไทยเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นสถานที่ที่มีชื่อเสียงไปทั่วโลกอีกด้วย
