ประวัติ
วัดสุทัศนเทพวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดราชวรมหาวิหาร ตั้งอยู่ริมถนนตีทองและถนนบำรุงเมืองหน้าวัดหันออกทางถนนอุณากรรณ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกทรงดำรัสให้สร้างขึ้น (ประมาณ พ.ศ. 2350-2351) เดิมพระราชทานนามว่า “วัดมหาสุทธาวาส” โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระวิหารขึ้นก่อนเพื่อประดิษฐานพระศรีศากยมุนี (พระโต) ซึ่งอัญเชิญมาจากพระวิหารหลวงวัดมหาธาตุ จังหวัดสุโขทัย เป็นพระพุทธรูปที่สร้างขึ้นในสมัยราชวงศ์พระร่วง ครั้นเวลาผ่านไปพระวิหารหลวงของวัดก็หักพังลงทำให้พระพุทธรูปองค์นี้ต้องตากแดดกรำฝน จนกระทั่งมาในสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ไปพบเข้าก็ทรงมีพระดำรัสให้อัญเชิญเข้ามายังพระวิหารของวัดสุทัศน์ ฯ ในพระนคร แต่เมื่ออัญเชิญเข้ามาแล้วพระวิหารในวัดนี้ยังสร้างไม่เสร็จ แต่สิ้นรัชกาลก่อนที่จะประดิษฐานเป็นสังฆาราม จึงเรียกกันว่า วัดพระโต วัดพระใหญ่ หรือวัดเสาชิงช้าบ้าง
