ข้อตกลงการค้าเสรีอเมริกาเหนือ หรือเรียกคำย่อว่า นาฟตา เป็นองค์กรทางเศรษฐกิจในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ ในการที่จะร่วมมือกันแสวงหาตลาดส่งออกและลดต้นทุนการผลิตสินค้า เพื่อให้มีราคาถูกลง สามารถแข่งขันกับตลาดโลกได้

ประวัติการก่อตั้ง
หลังจากที่สหภาพยุโรป ได้แก้ปัญหาภาวะเศรษฐกิจถดถอย โดยการเปิดตลาดเสรีเป็นตลาดเดียวแล้ว ผู้นำแห่งประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา แคนาดาและเม็กซิโกได้จัดประชุมกันเมื่อ พ.ศ.2535 ที่จะเปิดเสรีทางการค้าระหว่างกันให้เป็นตลาดเดียว และจะลดอัตราภาษีศุลกากรให้เหลือร้อยละ 0 ภายใน 5 ปี โดยจะเริ่มดำเนินการตั้งแต่ 1 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2537 เป็นต้นไป

วัตถุประสงค์ในการก่อตั้ง
1. เพื่อแสวงหาตลาดสินค้าส่งออกในภูมิภาคอื่น
2. เพื่อส่งเสริมการจ้างงาน การเคลื่อนย้ายแรงงาน ที่จะผลิตสินค้าให้ได้ราคาถูกและมีคุณภาพดี
3. เพื่อส่งเสริมธุรกิจขนาดเล็กให้ขยายตัวและมีประสิทธิภาพสูง

ผลการปฏิบัติงาน
ประเทศสมาชิกต่างได้รับผลประโยชน์จากการทำข้อตกลงทางการค้าเสรีอเมริกาเหนือ คือ เม็กซิโก ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้อัตราแลกเปลี่ยนเงินเปโซตกต่ำมากก็เริ่มแข็งตัวขึ้น ภาวะเศรษฐกิจที่ซบเซากลับฟื้นและดีขึ้นโดยลำดับ ทั้งนี้เพราะสหรัฐอเมริกาปล่อยสินเชื่อระยะยาว ลดอัตราภาษีนำเข้า และอนุญาตให้รถบรรทุกของเม็กซิโกแล่นผ่านเข้าสู่สหรัฐอเมริกาได้ โดยไม่ต้องขนถ่ายสินค้าที่ชายแดน อันเป็นการเพิ่มค่าใช้จ่ายและเสียเวลา สหรัฐอเมริกา มีสินค้าส่งออกไปเม็กซิโกและแคนาดามากขึ้น ทั้งสินค้าเกษตรและอุตสาหกรรม ทำให้เศรษฐกิจขยายตัวขึ้น และทำให้มีตำแหน่งงานเพิ่ม มีการจ้างงานมากขึ้น แคนาดาสามารถซื้อสินค้าของสหรัฐอเมริกาและเม็กซิโกถูกลง อันเนื่องมาจากการลดอัตราภาษีศุลกากร

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างไทยกับข้อตกลงการค้าเสรีอเมริกาเหนือ
