ประวัติความเป็นมา

- ไตรภูมิกภาหรือไตรภูมิพระร่วงเป็นวรรณกรรมสุโขทัย เป็นพระราชนิพนธ์ของพระมหาธรรมราชาลิไท แต่งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. ๑๘๘๘ ในขณะที่ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นพระมหาอุปราช

- เป็นวรรณคดีในพุทธศาสนาเรื่องแรกที่แต่งขึ้นในประเทศไทย มีลักษณะเป็นวิทยานิพนธ์

- เขียนโดยการค้นคว้ารวบรวมคัมภีร์ในพระพุทธศาสนากว่า ๓๐ เล่ม

- ตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๕๗ โดยสมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ

- เพื่อเผยแพร่อภิธรรม

- เพื่อเป็นบทเรียนอภิธรรมแก่มารกาของพระยาลิไท

- เพื่อเผยแพร่พุทธศาสนาแก่ประชาชน

ความสำคัญของเนื้อเรื่อง

- เป็นการสั่งสอนผู้ที่จะทำบุญจะได้ขึ้นสวรรค์และผู้ที่ทำบาปจะตกนรก โดยให้ภาพนรกที่น่ากลัวหวาดเสียว คนจะได้แกรงกลัวต่อบาปไม่อยากตกนรก วาดภาพสวรรค์ให้เป็นแดนสุขารมณ์ คนจะได้ทำบุญเพื่อไปสู่สวรรค์
