ประเทศไทยเราได้นำระบบงบประมาณแบบ PPBS มาประยุกต์ใช้อย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อปี 2525 (เริ่มใช้ในการจัดทำงบประมาณปี พ.ศ.2527) สำนักงบประมาณได้เริ่มจัดทำโครงสร้างแผนงาน (Program Structure) และให้ส่วนราชการต่างๆ พัฒนาแผนงานในรายละเอียดตามภารกิจของตนเองนับตั้งแต่ปีงบประมาณ 2527 เป็นต้นมารัฐบาล
