ความเป็นมาของเมืองนนทบุรี
นนทบุรี เป็นเมืองเก่าแก่มาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานีมีความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนานกว่า 460 ปี

เดิมตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลบ้านตลาดขวัญ ซึ่งเป็นสวนผลไม้ที่ขึ้นชื่อในสมัยนั้นดังปรากฎในจดหมายเหตุบันทึกการเดินทางของ ลาลูแบร์ ราชทูตชาวฝรั่งเศสผู้ซึ่งเดินทางเข้ามาในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชว่า "สวนผลไม้ที่บางกอกนั้นมีอาณาบริเวณยาวไปตามชายฝั่งโดยทวนขี้นสู่เมืองสยามถึง 4 ลี้ กระทั่งจรดตลาดขวัญ ทำให้เมืองหลวงแห่งนี้อุดมสมบูรณ์ไปด้วยผลาหาร ซึ่งคนพื้นเมืองชอบบริโภคกันนักหนา"

ครั้งถึงปี พ.ศ. 2092 ในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ บ้านตลาดขวัญได้รับการยกฐานะเป็นเมืองนนทบุรี ต่อมาในสมัยรัชการที่ 5 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายไปตั้งที่ปากคลองบางซื่อบ้านตลาดขวัญ ตั้งศาลากลางขึ้นที่ปากคลองบางซื่อฝั่งซ้ายของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2471 รัชกาลที่ 7 โปรดเกล้าฯให้ย้ายศาลากลางมาตั้งที่โรงเรียนราชวิทยาลัยบ้านบางขวาง ตำบลสวนใหญ่ ปัจจุบันศาลากลางจังหวัดนนทบุรีได้ย้ายที่ทำการมาอยู่ที่ถนนรัตนาธิเบศร์

พ.ศ. 2092 สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิแห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา ยกบ้านตลาดขวัญขึ้นเป็นเมืองนนทบุรี โดยตัวเมืองนนทบุรีแต่เดิมนั้นตั้งอยู่ที่ ตําบลบางกระสอในปัจจุบัน โดยมีวัดหัวเมือง (ปัจจุบันเป็นวัดร้างที่ทางราชการได้ใช้เป็นสถานที่ตั้งโรงพยาบาลพระนั่งเกล้า) เป็นเขตเหนือ และ มีวัดท้ายเมืองเป็นเขตใต้

พ.ศ. 2179 พระเจ้าปราสาททองทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดคลองลัดตอนใต้วัดท้ายเมือง ไปทะลุออกหน้าวัดเขมา ทั้งนี้ เพราะเดิมทีนั้นแม่น้ําเจ้าพระยาไหลวกวนโดยเข้าแม่น้ําอ้อมไหลมา ทางบางใหญ่แล้ววกเข้าคลองบางกรวยข้างซอยวัดชะลอมาออกหน้าวัดเขมา ดังนั้นเมื่อขุดคลองลัด แล้วกระแสน้ําจึงเปลี่ยนทางเดินไหลเข้าคลองลัดที่ขุดใหม่ นานเข้าก็กลายเป็นแม่น้ําเจ้าพระยาใหม่ ในปัจจุบัน ส่วนแม่น้ําเจ้าพระยาเดิมก็ตื้นเขิน กลายเป็นคลองไปในที่สุด และ เมื่อคราว สมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช ขึ้นครองราชย์ พ.ศ. 2208 พระองค์ทรงเห็นว่า เมื่อแม่น้ําเจ้าพระยาเปลี่ยนทางเดินทําให้ข้าศึกเข้าประชิดพระนครได้ง่ายขึ้น จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างป้อมปราการตรงปากแม่น้ำอ้อม และให้ย้ายเมืองนนทบุรีมาอยู่ปากแม่น้ําอ้อมในคราวเดียวกัน เมืองนนทบุรีจึงตั้งอยู่บริเวณปากแม่น้ําอ้อมตั้งแต่ นั้นมา จนกระทั่งถึงยุคสมัยของกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ในรัชสมัยของ พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงโปรดฯ ให้รื้อป้อมและเมืองบางส่วนเพื่อนําอัฐ (เงิน) ไปสร้างวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติ และบางส่วนก็ถูกกระแสน้ำพัดเซาะพังทลายลงน้ำไป ปัจจุบันจึงเหลือแต่ศาลหลักเมืองเท่านั้น
