เนื่องจากในปัจจุบันประเทศไทยของเรานี้กำลังจะก้าวเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน หน่วยงานทุกหน่วยงานทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชนต่างให้ความสำคัญเป็นอย่างยิ่งเนื่องจากต้องเตรียมตัวให้พร้อมในทุกด้านไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้านเศรษฐกิจ ด้านสังคม และการศึกษา เป็นต้น
โดยอาเซียนหรือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (ASEAN : The Association of South East Asian Nations) ได้ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2510 โดยประเทศผู้ก่อตั้งอาเซียน คือ ไทย อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ และสิงคโปร์ ต่อมาในปีพ.ศ.2527 บรูไน ดารุสซาลาม ได้เข้ามาเป็นสมาชิก ตามด้วยเวียดนามเข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2538 ขณะที่พม่าและลาวเข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกใน พ.ศ.2540 และประเทศสุดท้ายคือกัมพูชา เข้าเป็นสมาชิกอาเซียน เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2542 ปัจจุบันอาเซียนมีประเทศสมาชิกทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศได้แก่ กัมพูชา ไทย บรูไน พม่า ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย ลาว เวียดนาม สิงคโปร์และอินโดนีเซีย
โดยเมื่อวันที่ 1 มีนาคม พ.ศ.2552 ผู้นำอาเซียนได้ลงนามรับรองปฏิญญาชะอำ หัวหิน ว่าด้วยแผนงานจัดตั้งประชาคมอาเซียน (ค.ศ. 2009-2015) เพื่อจัดตั้งประชาคมอาเซียนภายในปี 2558 ซึ่งประชาคมอาเซียนประกอบด้วยเสาหลัก 3 เสา ดังต่อไปนี้ 1.ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน (ASEAN Security Community – ASC) มุ่งให้ประเทศในภูมิภาคอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสันติ มีระบบแก้ไขความขัดแย้ง ระหว่างกันได้ด้วยดี มีเสถียรภาพอย่างรอบด้าน มีกรอบความร่วมมือเพื่อรับมือกับภัยคุกคามความมั่นคงทั้งรูปแบบเดิมและรูปแบบใหม่ ๆ เพื่อให้ประชาชนมีความปลอดภัยและมั่นคง2.ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community – AEC) มุ่งให้เกิดการรวมตัวกันทางเศรษฐกิจ และการอำนวยความสะดวกในการติดต่อค้าขายระหว่างกัน อันจะทำให้ภูมิภาคมีความเจริญมั่งคั่ง และสามารถแข่งขันกับภูมิภาคอื่น ๆ ได้เพื่อความอยู่ดีกินดีของประชาชนในประเทศอาเซียน3.ประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community – ASCC) เพื่อให้ประชาชนแต่ละประเทศอาเซียนอยู่ร่วมกันภายใต้แนวคิดสังคมที่เอื้ออาทร มีสวัสดิการทางสังคมที่ดี และมีความมั่นคงทางสังคม
สำหรับการเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อก้าวเข้าสู่การเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนนั้น ประเทศไทยในฐานะที่เป็นผู้นำในการก่อตั้งสมาคมอาเซียน มีศักยภาพในการเป็นแกนนำในการสร้างประชาคมอาเซียนให้เข้มแข็ง จึงได้มีการเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อก้าวเข้าสู่การเป็นประชาอาเซียน โดยจะมุ่งเน้นเรื่องการศึกษา ซึ่งจัดอยู่ในประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ที่จะมีบทบาทสำคัญที่จะส่งเสริมให้ประชาคมด้านอื่น ๆ ให้มีความเข้มแข็ง เนื่องจากการศึกษาเป็นรากฐานของการพัฒนาในทุก ๆ ด้าน และจะมีการส่งเสริมให้ประเทศไทยเป็นศูนย์กลางด้านอาเซียนศึกษา เป็นศูนย์การเรียนรู้ด้านศาสนาและวัฒนธรรม เพื่อขับเคลื่อนประชาคมอาเซียนด้วยการศึกษา ด้วยการสร้างความเข้าใจในเรื่องเกี่ยวกับเพื่อนบ้านในกลุ่มประเทศอาเซียน ความแตกต่างทางด้านชาติพันธุ์ หลักสิทธิมนุษยชน ตลอดจนการส่งเสริมการเรียนการสอนภาษาต่างประเทศเพื่อพัฒนาการติดต่อสื่อสารระหว่างกันในประชาคมอาเซียน
