การผลิต หมายถึง การนำเอาปัจจัยการผลิตอันได้แก่ ที่ดิน ทุน แรงงาน และความสามารถในการประกอบการมาผ่านกระบวนการอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งภายใต้เทคโนโลยีระดับหนึ่ง ผสมผสานกันเพื่อให้เกิดสินค้าและบริการเพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการของมนุษย์ หรือกล่าวอีกนัยหนึ่งก็คือ การผลิต เป็นกระบวนการเพิ่มคุณค่าหรือประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจ (economic utility) ให้กับปัจจัยการผลิตต่างๆ เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการของมนุษย์ให้เกิดประโยชน์มากที่สุด ตัวอย่างของการผลิต ได้แก่ การนำข้าวเปลือกมาผ่านกระบวนการสีเป็นข้าวสาร การเอาด้ายมาทอเป็นผ้าผืน การให้บริการทางการแพทย์ การศึกษา การขนส่ง ฯลฯ
