อุทยานแห่งชาติไทรทอง ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ป่าบนเทือกเขาพังเหย ในอำเภอหนองบัวระเหว เทพสถิต ภักดีชุมพล และหนองบัวแดง มีเนื้อที่ 319 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นป่าต้นน้ำลำธารของลำห้วยหลายสายซึ่งเป็นลำน้ำสาขาของแม่น้ำชี สภาพป่าเป็นป่าเต็งรัง ป่าดิบแล้ง ผสมกับป่าเบญจพรรณ มีต้นไผ่รวกขึ้นอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก นับเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติที่อุดมสมบูรณ์สวยงาม ภายในอุทยานฯ มีสถานที่น่าสนใจคือ

น้ำตกไทรทอง ห่างจากที่ทำการ 1 กิโลเมตรไปตามทางรถยนต์และเดินเท้าอีก 400 เมตร เป็นน้ำตกชั้นเตี้ย ๆ สูงเพียง 5 เมตรแต่มีความกว้างประมาณ 80 เมตร ด้านหน้าเป็นแอ่งน้ำใหญ่ สามารถลงเล่นน้ำได้เรียกว่า วังไทร เหนือน้ำตกมีวังน้ำขนาดใหญ่เรียกว่า วังเงือก น้ำไหลลงตามความคดเคี้ยวและความลาดชันของลานหินลงสู่น้ำตกไทรทอง มีความยาว 150 เมตร จากน้ำตกไทรทองขึ้นไปถึงน้ำตกชวนชมมีเส้นทางเดินศึกษาธรรมชาติระยะทาง 2 กิโลเมตร มีจุดเด่นต่าง ๆ ตามเส้นทาง เช่น ผาพิมใจ ดงเฟิร์นข้าหลวงหลังหลาย น้ำตกบุษบากร เป็นเส้นทางที่ร่มรื่นมีพันธุ์ไม้หลากหลายสวยงามให้ชมตลอดเส้นทาง

น้ำตกชวนชม อยู่เหนือน้ำตกไทรทองไปตามเส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติ 2 กิโลเมตร น้ำตกมีความสูง 20 เมตร รอบบริเวณมีต้นไม้ร่มรื่นทุ่งบัวสวรรค์ หรือทุ่งดอกกระเจียว อยู่ห่างจากที่ทำการอุทยานฯ 10 กิโลเมตร บริเวณสันเขาพังเหยด้าน ทิศตะวันตก ในช่วงปลายเดือนมิถุนายนถึงสิ้นเดือนสิงหาคม ต้นกระเจียวจะออกดอกสวยงามเต็มทุ่ง มีทั้งดอกสีชมพู
และสีขาว

ผาพ่อเมือง อยู่ห่างจากที่ทำการอุทยานฯ ประมาณ 10 กิโลเมตร เป็นแนวหน้าผาตามสันเขาพังเหยด้านตะวันตก ตามเส้นทางขึ้นสู่ทุ่งบัวสวรรค์ ยาวประมาณ 3 กิโลเมตร สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ 700-908 เมตร มองลงไปเป็นตัวอำเภอภักดีชุมพลและเทือกเขาพญาฝ่อ ที่กั้นระหว่างชัยภูมิกับเพชรบูรณ์ มีเส้นทางเดินชมธรรมชาติลัดเลาะตามแนวหน้าผาซึ่งมีจุดชมวิวเด่น ๆ อีก 4 จุด คือ ผาเพลินใจ ผาอาทิตย์ อัสดง ผาสวนสวรรค์และผาหำหด ที่ขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็นหน้าผาที่หวาดเสียวที่สุดเมื่อขึ้นไป นั่งบนชะง่อนหินนั้น

จุดชมทิวทัศน์ผาหำหด เป็นจุดสูงของเทือกเขาพังเหย สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 864 เมตร อากาศหนาวเย็นตลอดปี มีสถานที่กางเต็นท์พักแรมเพื่อสัมผัสความหนาวเย็นของอากาศ
