อนุสรณ์สถานฯ แห่งนี้เปิดเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์มาตั้งแต่ปี 2539 โดยสถานที่แห่งนี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นแหล่งศึกษาทางประวัติศาสตร์นับตั้งแต่อดีตกาลมาจนถึงยุคสร้างบ้านสร้างเมืองและเน้นหนักในช่วงยุคสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 สงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพา โดยเป็นสถานที่ที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวดังกล่าวได้ดีที่สุด เพราะเป็นที่เก็บรวบรวมประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนหนึ่งของสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพาที่เกิดขึ้นในแถบอำเภอขุนยวม นับตั้งแต่รัฐบาลไทยต้องยินยอมให้ทหารญี่ปุ่นเดินทัพผ่านและตั้งกองกำลังในไทยเพื่อรักษาประเทศ และต้องทำกติกาสัญญาทางทหารระหว่างไทยกับญี่ปุ่น เพื่อช่วยเหลือญี่ปุ่นซึ่งจะเดินทัพเข้าพม่าและอินเดียนั่นเอง

ในส่วนที่สองนั้น จะเป็นส่วนของการจัดแสดงขอใช้เครื่องแต่งกาย ทั้งเสื้อผ้าและหมวกเหล็ก เครื่องใช้ส่วนตัวของทหารญี่ปุ่นที่เก็บรวบรวมไว้ได้ให้ได้ชม และในส่วนสุดท้ายนั้นเป็นการจัดแสดงเรื่องราวของประเพณีวัฒนธรรมและความเป็นอยู่ของชาวไทใหญ่ และสถานที่สำคัญต่างๆ ในอำเภอขุนยวม ณ ช่วงเวลานั้นนั่นเอง
