พิพัฒนาการ หรือ Progressive หมายถึง การเปลี่ยนแปลงไม่หยุดนิ่ง การจัดการศึกษาต้องปรับปรุงให้สอดคล้องกับความเปลี่ยนแปลง จึงได้เชื่อว่า “แนวทางแห่งความมีอิสระเสรีที่จะนำไปสู่การเปลี่ยนแปลง ปรับปรุง วัฒนธรรมและสังคม”
พิพัฒนาการนิยมเชื่อว่าการศึกษาคือชีวิตไม่ใช่เป็นการเตรียมตัวเพื่อชีวิต หมายความว่า การที่จะให้ได้มาซึ่งความรู้ก็โดยการลงมือกระทำ จริง ๆ ที่จะก่อให้เกิดประสบการณ์กับผู้เรียน กิจกรรมการเรียนการสอนจึงมุ่งการพัฒนาทางด้านร่างกาย อารมณ์ สังคม และสติปัญญาไปพร้อม ๆ กัน สามารถปรับตัวให้อยู่ในสังคมได้อย่างเป็นสุข
