ประวัติจังหวัดลำพูน
จังหวัดลำพูน เดิมชื่อเมืองหริภุญไชย เป็นเมืองโบราณ มีอายุประมาณ 1,343 ปี ตามพงศาวดารโยนกเล่าสืบต่อกันถึงการสร้างเมืองหริภุญไชย โดยฤาษีวาสุเทพ เป็นผู้เกณฑ์พวกเม็งคบุตร หรือ ชนเชื้อชาติมอญมาสร้างเมืองนี้ขึ้น ในพื้นที่ระหว่างแม่น้ำสองสาย คือ แม่น้ำกวง และแม่น้ำปิง เมื่อมาสร้างเสร็จได้ส่งทูตไปเชิญ ราชธิดากษัตริย์เมืองละโว้พระนาม “จามเทวี” มาเป็นปฐมกษัตริย์ปกครองเมืองหริภุญไชย สืบราชวงศ์กษัตริย์ ต่อมาหลายพระองค์ จนกระทั่งถึงสมัยพระยายีบาจึงได้เสียการปกครองให้แก่พ่อขุนเม็งรายมหาราช ผู้รวบรวม แว่นแคว้นทางเหนือเข้าเป็นอาณาจักรล้านนา เมืองลำพูน ถึงแม้ว่า จะตกอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของอาณาจักรล้านนา แต่ก็ได้เป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดมรดกทางศิลปและวัฒนธรรมให้แก่ผู้ที่เข้ามาปกครอง ดังปรากฏหลักฐานทั่วไปในเวียงกุมกาม เชียงใหม่และเชียงราย เมืองลำพูนจึงยังคงความสำคัญในทางศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมของอาณาจักรล้านนา จนกระทั่งสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช เมืองลำพูนจึงได้เข้ามาอยู่ในราชอาณาจักรไทย มีผู้ครองนครสืบต่อกันมาจนถึงสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ต่อมาภายหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ. 2475 เมื่อเจ้าผู้ครองนครองค์สุดท้าย คือ พลตรีเจ้าจักรคำ ขจรศักดิ์ ถึงแก่พิราลัย เมืองลำพูนจึงเปลี่ยนเป็นจังหวัด มีผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดเป็นผู้ปกครอง สืบมาจนกระทั่งถึงปัจจุบัน
