ชุมชนคีรีวงสามารถสืบประวัติย้อนไปได้กว่า 300 ปี โดยทหารที่กลับจากสงครามเมืองไทรบุรี ได้นำครอบครัวผู้คนกลุ่มหนึ่งล่องเรือมาตามลำคลองท่าดี จนพบทำเลที่เหมาะสม มีภูเขา มีป่า มีแม่น้ำ 3 สาย จึงก่อตั้งชุมชนและให้ชื่อว่า “บ้านขุนน้ำ”

ต่อมาชุมชนได้มีการพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องเกิดเป็นหมู่บ้านอาสาพัฒนาป้องกันตนเอง มีการส่งหมู่บ้านเข้าประกวดซึ่งชนะตั้งแต่ระดับอำเภอ จังหวัด ภาค และในปี 2529 ก็ชนะระดับประเทศ ทำให้มีผู้คนมากมายเข้ามาศึกษาดูงาน
