“บันได 5 ขั้น” ของการจัดการเรียนการสอนในโรงเรียนมาตรฐานสากลเพื่อพัฒนาผู้เรียนสู่คุณภาพที่คาดหวัง คือ ขั้นที่ 1 การตั้งประเด็นคำถาม/สมมุติฐาน (Hypothesis Formulation) เป็นการฝึกให้ผู้เรียนรู้จักคิด สังเกต ตั้งข้อสงสัย ตั้งคำถามอย่างมีเหตุผล ขั้นที่ 2 การสืบค้นความรู้จากแหล่งเรียนรู้และสารสนเทศ (Searching for Information) เป็นการฝึกแสวงหาความรู้ ข้อมูล และสารสนเทศ จากแหล่งเรียนรู้อย่างหลากหลาย เช่น ห้องสมุด อินเตอร์เน็ต หรือจาการปฏิบัติทดลอง เป็นต้น ขั้นที่ 3 การสรุปองค์ความรู้ (Knowledge Formation) เป็นการฝึกให้นำความรู้และสารสนเทศ หรือข้อมูลที่ได้จากการอภิปราย การทดลอง มาคิดวิเคราะห์สังเคราะห์ และสรุปเป็นองค์ความรู้ ขั้นที่ 4 การสื่อสารและการนำเสนออย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ (Effective Communication) เป็นการฝึกให้นำ ความรู้ที่ได้มานำเสนอและสื่อสารอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพให้เกิดความเข้าใจ และขั้นที่ 5 การบริการสังคมและจิตสาธารณะ (Public Service) เป็นการนำความรู้สู่การปฏิบัติ ซึ่งผู้เรียนจะต้องมีความรู้ในบริบทรอบตัวและบริบทโลกตามวุฒิภาวะที่เหมาะสม โดยจะนำองค์ความรู้ไปใช้ให้เกิดประโยชน์อย่างสร้างสรรค์
และในการจัดการเรียนรู้ตามบันได 5 ขั้นนั้นมีหลายวิธี แต่วิธีการหนึ่งที่ยอมรับกันว่ามีประสิทธิภาพและใช้กันอย่างกว้างขวางเป็นการเปิดโลกกว้างให้ผู้เรียนได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าอย่างอิสระในเรื่องหรือประเด็นที่สนใจ คือ การศึกษาค้นคว้าด้วยตนเอง (Independent Study :IS) ดังนั้น ในโรงเรียนมาตรฐานสากลจึงนำบันได 5 ขั้นสู่การจัดการเรียนการสอนโดยผ่านรายวิชา “การศึกษ าค้นคว้าด้วยตนเอง” ซึ่งเป็นรายวิชาเพิ่มเติมประกอบด้วย 3 สาระ ดังนี้
IS 1 การศึกษาค้นคว้าและสร้างองค์ความรู้ (Research and Knowledge Formation) เป็นสาระที่มุ่งให้ผู้เรียนกำหนดประเด็นปัญหา ตั้งสมมุติฐาน ค้นคว้า แสวงหาความรู้และฝึกทักษะการคิดวิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์ และสร้างองค์ความรู้ (บันไดขั้นที่ 1-3)

IS 2 การสื่อสารและการนำเสนอ (Communication and Presentation) เป็นสาระที่มุ่งให้ผู้เรียน นำความรู้ที่ได้รับ มาพัฒนาวิธีการถ่ายทอด/สื่อสารความหมาย/แนวคิด ข้อมูลและองค์ความรู้ ด้วยวิธีการ นำเสนอที่เหมาะสม หลากหลายรูปแบบและมีประสิทธิภาพ (บันไดขั้นที่ 4)

IS 3 การนำองค์ความรู้ไปใช้บริการสังคม (Social Service Activity) เป็นสาระที่มุ่งให้ผู้เรียน นำ/ประยุกต์องค์ความรู้ไปสู่การปฏิบัติ หรือนำไปใช้ให้เกิดประโยชน์ เกิดบริการสาธารณะ (Public Service) (บันไดขั้นที่ 5)
