ในการแบ่งประเภทของรถยนต์ มีการแบ่งได้หลายรูปแบบ เช่น ใช้ชนิดของเครื่องยนต์ในการแบ่ง หรือใช้รูปร่าง/โครงสร้างของรถยนต์ หรือใช้ชนิดของเชื้อเพลิง หรือใช้การขับเคลื่อน หรืออาจแบ่งตามความรู้สึกของผู้บรโภค เช่น รูปร่างภายนอกของรถยนต์ หรือการวางเบาะที่นั่งของผู้โดยสาร หรือแม้แต่จำนวนประตูของรถยนต์ แต่โดยทั่วไปเราจะแบ่งตามรูปร่างภายนอกของรถยนต์ ซึ่งปัจจุบันสามารถแบ่งได้ 7 รูปแบบด้วยกัน คือ
1. Sedan รูปร่างลักษณะของรถยนต์แบบดังแสดงในรูปที่ 9 ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นรถนั่งส่วนบุคคลแบบเก๋ง มีที่นั่งทั้งข้างหน้า และข้างหลัง โดยทั่วไปสามารถนั่งได้ 4-6 คน มีทั้งแบบ 2 ประตู และ 4 ประตู

2. แบบเปิดประทุน (Convertible Top) ลักษณะรถแบบ Convertible Top ดังแสดงในรูปที่ 10 ลักษณะรถแบบนี้มีหลังคาที่สามารถเปิดขึ้น-ลง โดยทั่วไปหลังคาทำจากวัสดุไวนิล (Vinyl) รถแบบนี้มีทั้ง 2 ประตู และ 4 ประตู รถที่มีเบาะที่นั่งเฉพาะด้านหน้า เราเรียกว่า รถสปอร์ต (Sports)
