Krabi municipal authorities are not horsing around with road safety. They have decided motorists will see more than just a pedestrian on a crossing - they will see a zebra. A painted zebra, that is.

In a delightfully imaginative attempt to make motorists aware of pedestrians, especially children, officials have had the road crossings painted with actual zebra depictions, not just the plain and standard black and white stripes.

Krabi mayor Kiattisak Phukaoluan told Thai Rath online on Sunday that he hoped the zebra paintings at the crossings will draw attention to the town and turn it into a place for art in the southern region, as well as provide safety.

The project drew praise from Mr Kiattisak's followers on his Facebook page.

Praneet Thavorn hopes the new-look zebra crossings will send a strong message to drivers who do not stop to let people cross the road. Theerawut Chusin said the image should lure more adults and children into using the crossings.
