ต่อมาเมืองตะกั่วทุ่งถูกยุบเป็นอำเภอขึ้นกับเมืองพังงา ครั้นถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 7 เกิดภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ ที่ประชุมเทศาภิบาลมณฑลภูเก็ตจึงมีมติให้ยุบเมืองตะกั่วป่าขึ้นกับจังหวัดพังงาด้วย ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2474 เป็นต้นมา
