ห้างสร้างสรรพสินค้าแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย มีชื่อว่า "ห้างไนติงเกล" หรือชื่อเต็มคือ ไนติงเกล โอลิมปิค เป็นห้างที่มีอายุยาวนานมาเกือบ 80 ปี และในทุกวันนี้ก็ยังให้บริการอยู่ เริ่มแรกห้างดังกล่าวได้ตั้งขึ้นอยู่บริเวณแยกพาหุรัด เริ่มเปิดกิจการเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2473 ก่อตั้งโดยนายนัติ นิยมวานิช จากห้างเล็ก ๆ ที่ตั้งใกล้กับศาลาเฉลิมกรุง ก็ได้ขยับขยายจนกลายเป็น ห้างไนติงเกล-โอลิมปิค ซึ่งเปิดบริการอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 5 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2509
