ยืนยง โอภากุล หรือ แอ๊ด คาราบาว ศิลปินเพลงเพื่อชีวิต เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 พฤศจิกายน 2497 พื้นเพคนตำบลท่าพี่เลี้ยง จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี เป็นบุตรชายฝาแฝดคนเล็ก ครอบครัวมีอาชีพค้าขายของ ที่ตลาดเมืองสุพรรณบุรี เริ่มต้นการศึกษาในระดับประถมศึกษาโรงเรียนวัดสุวรรณภูมิ ระดับมัธยมที่ โรงเรียนกรรณสูตศึกษาลัย จากนั้นการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งสำคัญก็เกิดขึ้น แอ๊ดตัดสินใจบินเดี่ยวมาพร้อมกับรถส่งไปรษณีย์เพื่อเข้ามาศึกษาต่อระดับ อุดมศึกษาที่อุเทนถวาย และบินไปเรียนต่อระดับปริญญาที่ ประเทิศฟิลิปปินส์ สมัยเรียนร่วมก่อตั้งวงคาราบาวกับกิรติ พรหมสาขา ณ สกลนคร หรือ เขียวคาราบาวเพื่อนสมัยเรียนที่ฟิลิปปินส์ หลังจากจบการศึกษาแล้ว ได้บินกลับมาเมืองไทยเข้าทำงานในตำแหน่งสถาปนิกที่การเคหะแห่งชาติ เป็นเวลา 5 ปีและมีเล่นดนตรีตอนกลางคืนไปด้วย
จากนั้นได้มีโอกาสเข้าไปเป็นโปรดิวเซอร์ให้วงแฮมเมอร์ที่ทำเพลง ประกอบภาพยนตร์เรื่องหมามุ่ยของ พนม นพพร ในสมัยนั้น จากการทำงานดังกล่าวจึงเกิดแรงบันดาลใจในการทำอัลบั้มชุดแรกขึ้นมาในนามวงคาราบาว ใช้ชื่อชุดว่าขี้เมา ใน ปี พ.ศ. 2524 โดยชักชวนเขียวที่ทำงานประจำลาออกมาร่วมกันทำอัลบั้มดังกล่าวด้วย และนี่เองเป็นจุดเริ่มแรกของ แอ๊ด คาราบาว หัวเรือใหญ่ที่นำพาวงคาราบาว ผ่านร้อน ผ่านหนาว ผ่านเรื่องราวการต่อสู้ ความวุ่นวายมากมาย มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ก้าวล่วงเข้าสู่ปีที่ 23 ด้วยผลงานเพลงมากกว่า 90 อัลบั้ม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นผลงานภาคปกติ ภาคพิเศษ ภาคแสดงสด ของคาราบาว
