ประวัติความเป็นมา
วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม เรียกกันเป็นสามัญว่า วัดพระแก้ว ตั้งอยู่ในเขตพระราชฐานชั้นนอก ทางทิศตะวันออกของพระบรมมหาราชวัง มีพระระเบียงล้อมรอบเป็นอาณาบริเวณ ทางด้านหน้ามีประตูสวัสดิโสภา ซึ่งเป็นประตูกำแพงพระบรมมหาราชวังเป็นทางเข้าพระอาราม สามารถติดต่อกับเขตพระราชฐานชั้นกลางได้ทางประตูดุสิตศาสดา
พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช โปรดให้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕ พร้อมกับการสร้างพระบรมมหาราชวังและกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ตามประเพณีการสร้างพระอารามในพระราชฐานสมัยอยุธยา โดยมีพระราชประสงค์จะให้เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากร และเป็นสถานที่บำเพ็ญพระราชกุศล ได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากรจากกรุงธนบุรีมาประดิษฐาน เมื่อวันที่ ๒๗ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๗
