ได้ รับการประกาศเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติเมื่อวันที่ 31 ธันวาคม 2534 สภาพภูมิประเทศเป็นที่ราบสูง และเนิน เขา มีหน้าผาสูงชันซึ่งเกิดจากการแยกตัวของผิวโลก สภาพป่าโดยทั่วไปเป็นป่าเต็งรัง มีหินทรายลักษณะ แปลกตากระจายอยู่ทั่วบริเวณ มีพันธุ์ไม้ดอกที่สวยงามขึ้นอยู่ตามลานหิน
การเดินทางจากอำเภอโขงเจียมใช้ เส้นทาง 2134 ต่อด้วยเส้นทาง 2112 แล้วแยกขวาไปผาแต้ม อีกราว 5 กิโลเมตร รวมระยะทางจาก โขงเจียมประมาณ 18 กิโลเมตร สถานที่น่าสนใจในอุทยานฯ ได้แก่
