ไทยมีความสัมพันธ์กับอาฟตาโดยตรงในฐานะที่เป็นสมาชิกประเทศหนึ่งที่มีมูลค่าการค้าสูงและส่วนใหญ่ไทยเป็นฝ่ายได้เปรียบดุลการค้าประเทศอื่นๆ ในกลุ่มอาเซียน เช่น พ.ศ.2540 ไทยมีมูลค่าการค้ากับอาเซียนรวม 626,251 ล้านบาท เป็นมูลค่าสินค้าออก 380,790 ล้านบาท มูลค่าสินค้าเข้า 245,425 ล้านบาท ไทยได้เปรียบดุลการค้าเป็นเงิน 135,365 ล้านบาท
จึงคาดว่าการส่งออกของไทยไปยังประเทศในกลุ่มอาเซียนจะมีมูลค่าสูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และไทยจะได้ดุลการค้าเพิ่มขึ้นด้วย สินค้าที่ไทยส่งออกไปยังประเทศในกลุ่มอาเซียนที่สำคัญ 5 อันดับแรก คือ
1. เครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ อุปกรณ์ และส่วนประกอบ
2. ข้าว
3. แผงวงจรไฟฟ้า
4. น้ำตาลทราย
5. น้ำมันสำเร็จรูป
