ทั้งนี้ การขานรับกับการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติได้เป็นไปอย่างกว้างขวาง ในปีเดียวกันนั้นเองทั่วโลกไม่น้อยกว่า 40 ประเทศ จัดงานฉลองวันเด็กแห่งชาติของตนขึ้น โดยได้มีการกำหนดว่าจะถือเอาวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันเด็กแห่งชาติ

สำหรับประเทศไทย ได้ตอบรับข้อเสนอของนายวี เอ็ม กุลกานี ซึ่งบอกผ่านมาทางกรมประชาสงเคราะห์ กระทรวงมหาดไทยว่า ไทยควรจัดงานเฉลิมฉลองวันเด็กแห่งชาติ รัฐบาลจึงได้จัดให้มีคณะกรรมการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติ ขึ้นมาคณะหนึ่ง ทำหน้าที่ประสานงานกับหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ทั้งภาครัฐบาล รัฐวิสาหกิจ และเอกชน กำหนดให้มีการฉลองวันเด็กแห่งชาติทั้งในส่วนกลางและส่วนภูมิภาค จุดประสงค์เพื่อให้เด็กทั่วประเทศทั้งในระบบโรงเรียน และนอกระบบโรงเรียน ได้รู้ถึงความสำคัญของตน เกี่ยวกับสิทธิ หน้าที่ ความรับผิดชอบ ระเบียบวินัย ที่มีต่อตนเองและสังคม มีความยึดมั่นในสถาบันชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ และการปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข

วันเด็ก

ด้วยเหตุนี้ คณะรัฐมนตรีจึงมีมติเห็นชอบ ในวันที่ 5 กุมภาพันธ์ 2507 ว่า ควรจะเปลี่ยนเป็นวันเสาร์ที่สองของเดือนมกราคม ที่มีความเหมาะสมและสะดวกมากกว่า ตามที่คณะกรรมการจัดงานวัดเด็กแห่งชาติเสนอมา ส่งผลให้ในปี 2507 ไม่มีงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติด้วยการประกาศเปลี่ยนได้เลยวันมาแล้ว งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจึงเริ่มจัดขึ้นใหม่อีกครั้งในปี 2508 เรื่อยมาถึงปัจจุบัน


วัตถุประสงค์การจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติ

สำหรับวัตถุประสงค์ของการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติ ที่รัฐบาลไทยกำหนดไว้ คือ เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของเด็ก สนใจในการเลี้ยงดูอบรมสั่งสอนเด็ก และช่วยเหลือสงเคราะห์เด็กเป็นพิเศษ เพื่อให้เด็กและและเยาวชนยึดมั่นในสถาบันชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ และการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข เพื่อให้เด็กรู้จักหน้าที่ของตนและอยู่ในระเบียบวินัยอันดี และเพื่อเผยแพร่ปฏิญญาสากลว่าด้วยสิทธิของเด็ก
