เครื่องหมายประจำจังหวัดตราดได้กำเนิดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ ๒๙ พฤษภาคม ๒๔๘๓ โดยคณะกรมการจังหวัดตราดได้พิจารณาปรึกษาหารือกับข้าราชการ พ่อค้า คหบดี มีความเห็นร่วมกันเป็นส่วนมากเลือกเอารูปธรรมชาติที่ดี เด่นที่สุดของจังหวัดตราดเป็นเครื่องหมายประจำจังหวัด คือ รูปเกาะช้าง ซึ่งเป็นเกาะที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของจังหวัด เคยเป็นที่ตั้งอำเภอมาระยะหนึ่ง เรียกว่า อำเภอเกาะช้าง ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ชายฝั่งทะเลตะวันออกของอ่าวไทย ด้านหน้าของรูปเกาะช้างมีโป๊ะ และเรือใบ ความหมายก็คือ ตามท้องทะเลรอบๆเกาะช้างเป็นแหล่งการประมง มีการทำโป๊ะ จับปลาอยู่มากแห่งและชุมไปด้วยสัตว์ทะเลต่าง ๆ สำหรับเรือใบนั้นมีความหมายให้ระลึกถึงว่าเมืองตราดได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นก่อนสมัยกรุงธนบุรี ในสมัยนั้นต้องใช้เรือใบติดต่อกับจังหวัดข้างเคียงและต่างประเทศ จึงให้มีภาพเรือใบปรากฏอยู่(เดิมจังหวัดตราดใช้ ตราประจำจังหวัดเป็นรูปเรือรบหลวงตราด)
