รัฐบาลไทยสามารถทยอยชำระคืนหนี้ IMF หลังจากที่ภาวะเศรษฐกิจและการเงินของประเทศเริ่มฟื้นตัวดีขึ้น ต่อมาในเดือนมกราคม 2003 คณะรัฐมนตรีในสมัยนายกรัฐมนตรีทักษิณ ชินวัตร ได้มีมติเห็นชอบให้ชำระคืนหนี้ที่เหลือทั้งหมดก่อนกำหนด โดยรัฐบาลมองว่า การชำระคืนหนี้ดังกล่าวก่อนกำหนดจะเป็นผลดีต่อภาพลักษณ์และความเชื่อมั่นต่อเศรษฐกิจไทย
