ประวัติศาสตร์

พื้นที่ของจังหวัดลพบุรี เคยเป็นที่ตั้งของเมืองโบราณหลายสมัย เดิมเรียก ละโว้ นับตั้งแต่สมัยขอมเรืองอำนาจ มีหลักฐานที่สำคัญคือ พระปรางค์สามยอด (อยู่ในเขตอำเภอเมืองลพบุรี) เป็นศิลปะเขมรสมัยบายน อายุราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 และมีศาลพระกาฬซึ่งเก่าแก่ในสมัยเดียวกัน

ลพบุรีเป็นเมืองที่มีประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนาน เพราะปรากฏร่องรอยการอยู่อาศัยของมนุษย์ติดต่อกันนานนับแต่ยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ไม่น้อยกว่า 3,000-4,000 ปีมาแล้ว จากการค้นพบหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีจำนวนมาก รวมทั้งมีหลักฐานเอกสารและจารึกต่าง ๆ กล่าวถึงเมืองลพบุรีอยู่หลายชิ้นเช่นในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 11-15 มีหลักฐานคือพงศาวดารเหนือ กล่าวถึงพระยากาฬวรรรณดิศได้ให้พราหมณ์ยกพลมาสร้างเมืองละโว้ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 1002 นอกจากนี้ยังมีตำนานชินกาลมาลีปกรณกล่าวถึงการสร้างเมืองหริภุญไชยใน พ.ศ. 1204 ต่อมาอีก 2 ปี คือ พ.ศ. 1206 ได้ส่งทูตล่องลำน้ำปิงไปเมืองลวปุระทูลขอเชื้อสายกษัตริย์ลวปุระให้ไปปกครอง กษัตริย์ลวปุระจึงได้พระราชทานพระนางจามเทวี พระราชธิดา ให้ไปครองเมืองหริภุญไชย ทรงสร้างวัดจามเทวีที่เมืองหริภุญไชย ชื่อเมืองลวปุระในตำนานชินกาลมาลีปกรณ์เป็นที่ยอมรับว่าคือเมืองลพบุรีในปัจจุบัน จึงสรุปได้ว่าลพบุรีคงเป็นเมืองสำคัญเมืองหนึ่ง แว่นแคว้นอื่นจึงได้ยอมรับและขอเชื้อสายไปปกครอง

ในระยะราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16-18 ละโว้หรือลพบุรีตกอยู่ภายใต้อำนาจทางการของอาณาจักรเขมรเป็นครั้งคราวปลายพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 เกิดความอ่อนแอในอาณาจักรเขมรทำให้รัฐต่าง ๆ ที่เคยอยู่ใต้อำนาจปลีกตัวเป็นอิสระ รวมทั้งละโว้ด้วย ในราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 ปรากฏหลักฐานว่าเมืองลพบุรี น่าจะเป็นเมืองที่พระเจ้าอู่ทองเคยครองราชย์มาก่อนที่จะย้ายไปสถาปนาอาณาจักรอยุธยา และในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยานี้เองที่ลพบุรีเจริญรุ่งเรืองที่สุด เพราะสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช (ครองราชย์ พ.ศ. 2199-2231) ได้สถาปนาลพบุรีเป็นราชธานีที่สอง หลังแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชแล้วลพบุรีขาดความสำคัญลงมากจนกระทั่งถึงรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ได้โปรดสถาปนาเมืองลพบุรีเป็นที่ประทับอีกแห่งหนึ่ง จึงเห็นได้ว่าเมืองลพบุรีมีความสำคัญติดต่อกันมายาวนานนับพันปี
