สุโขทัย ในอดีตเคยเป็นราชธานีแห่งแรกของชาติไทย เมื่อ 700 ปีมาแล้ว ปัจจุบันเป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งในเขตภาคเหนือตอนล่าง มีพื้นที่รวมประมาณ 6,596 ตารางกิโลเมตร อยู่ห่างกรุงเทพฯ 427 กิโลเมตรและห่างจากเชียงใหม่ 298 กิโลเมตร โดยสุโขทัยปัจจุบันแบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 9 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมืองสุโขทัย อำเภอกงไกรลาศ อำเภอคีรีมาศ อำเภอทุ่งเสลี่ยม อำเภอบ้านด่านลานหอย อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย อำเภอศรีสำโรง อำเภอสวรรคโลก และอำเภอศรีนคร



คำว่า สุโขทัย มาจากคำสองคำคือ สุข+อุทัย หมายความว่า รุ่งอรุณแห่งความสุข สุโขทัยได้เริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อประมาณปี พ. ศ. 1800 มีการสถาปนาราชวงศ์พระร่วงขึ้นปกครองสุโขทัย โดยมี พ่อขุนศรีอินทราทิตย์เป็นปฐมกษัตริย์ ตลอดระยะเวลา 120 ปี ราชวงศ์สุโขทัย มีกษัตริย์ปกครองหลายพระองค์ ที่สำคัญคือ "พ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช" ผู้ทรงประดิษฐ์อักษรไทย และ วางรากฐานการเมือง การปกครอง ศาสนา ตลอดจนขยาย อาณาเขตออกไปอย่างกว้างขวาง และด้วยความสำคัญในฐานะ ที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ทางศิลปะของไทยในสมัยเริ่มสร้าง อาณาจักร ที่ยังหลงเหลืออยู่ในอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย ได้รับการ ยกย่องให้เป็น มรดกโลก โดยองค์การ UNESCO เมื่อเดือน ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2534
