หมายถึง การที่บุคคลมองความแตกต่างของสถานภาพไม่เท่ากัน บางวัฒนธรรมมีการแบ่งแยกสูงระหว่างผู้ที่มีสถานภาพทางสังคม เช่น พ่อกับลูก เจ้านายกับลูกจ้อง ในสังคมที่มีความแตกต่างทางอำนาจสูง (high power distance) บุคคลจะรู้สึกถึงความแตกต่างระหว่างบุคคลสูง ผู้บริหารจะรู้สึกว่าตนมีความเหนือกว่าพนักงานมาก และสังคมที่มีความแตกต่างในด้านอำนาจต่ำ (low power distance) ผู้บริหารหรือผู้ที่อยู่ในสถานภาพสูงกว่า จะไม่รู้สึกว่าตนเองแตกต่างจากพนักงานมาก
