ประเทศไทยมีแนวชายฝั่งทะเลยาวประมาณ 2,600 กิโลเมตร โดยมีส่วนที่มีป่าชายเลนขึ้นอยู่ประมาณร้อยละ 36 ของความยาวชายฝั่งทั้งหมดเท่านั้น ป่าชายเลนในอดีตมีความอุดมสมบูรณ์มาก ซึ่งพบว่าพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนของประเทศไทยในปี 2504 มีเนื้อที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 2,299,375 ไร่ ต่อมาเมื่อมีการพัฒนาประเทศมากขึ้นอันเป็นผลจากการเจริญทางด้านเทคโนโลยีด้านต่าง ๆ ประกอบกับประชากรของประเทศเพิ่มมากขึ้น การใช้ประโยชน์ของป่าชายเลนในรูปแบบต่าง ๆจึงเพิ่มมากขึ้น ส่งผลให้พื้นที่ป่าชายเลนของประเทศลดลงอย่างมากในช่วงที่ผ่านมา จากสถิติข้อมูลพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนในปี 2546 พบว่ามีพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนเหลืออยู่ประมาณ 1,054,266 ไร่ โดยส่วนใหญ่จะกระจายอยู่ตามจังหวัดต่าง ๆ ทางภาคใต้ฝั่งตะวันตกประมาณ 836,545 ไร่ หรือคิดเป็นร้อยละ 79.35 ของพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนทั้งหมด รองลงไปอยู่ในภาคใต้ฝั่งตะวันออก ภาคตะวันออกและภาคกลาง โดยมีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 102,654 ไร่ 81,548 ไร่ และ 33,519 ไร่ ตามลำดับ หรือคิดเป็นร้อยละ 9.74,7.73 และ 3.18 ของพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนทั้งประเทศตามลำดับ
การลดลงของพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่อดีตมาจนถึงปัจจุบันตามที่มีการสำรวจและเก็บข้อมูลในช่วงต่าง ๆพบว่าในช่วงปี 2504 -2518 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 345,000 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 24,643 ไร่ ในช่วงปี 2518 –2522 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 158,700 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 39,675 ไร่ ในช่วงปี 2522 – 2529 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 567,951 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 81,136 ไร่ ในช่วงปี 2529 – 2532 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 99,230 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 33,076 ไร่ ในช่วงปี 2532 – 2534 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 42,113 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 21,056 ไร่ ในช่วงปี 2534 – 2536 เนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนลดลง 32,115 ไร่ หรือลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละ 16,057 ไร่ รวมพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนถูกทำลายไปแล้วตั้งแต่ปี 2504 – 2536 เท่ากับ 1,245,109 ไร่ คิดเป็นร้อยละ 54.15 ของเนื้อที่ป่าชายเลนปี 2504 โดยมีอัตราการลดลงเฉลี่ยปีละประมาณ 38,910 ไร่
