ลักษณะของดนตรีพื้นบ้าน คือ ดนตรีที่มีมาแต่ดั้งเดิมในทุกกลุ่มวัฒนธรรมทั่วโลก แม้แต่ในประเทศเดียวกันอาจจะมีดนตรีพื้นบ้านที่แตกต่างกันไปตามแต่ละท้องถิ่น ดนตรีพื้นบ้านมีทั้งลักษณะที่เป็นการบรรเลงของเครื่องดนตรีเพียงอย่างเดียว หรือการขับร้องประกอบการบรรเลง หรือการขับร้องเพียงอย่างเดียว โดยปกติดนตรีพื้นบ้านมีลักษณะดังนี้
