เมืองศรีสัชนาลัยเป็นเมืองเก่าแก่ที่

เมืองศรีสัชนาลัยเป็นเมืองเก่าแก่ที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ ปัจจุบันนี้เมืองศรีสัชนาลัยตั้งอยู่ที่อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า “เมืองเก่าศรีสัชนาลัย” กรมศิลปากรได้กำหนดแนวทางการอนุรักษ์เมืองศรีสัชนาลัย ซึ่งเรียกว่า โครงการอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2525 และสามารถบูรณะตบแต่งจนเปิดเป็นอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย เมื่อวันที่ 17 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2533
ต่อมาอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย พร้อมด้วยอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย และอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์กำแพงเพชร ได้รับเกียรติให้ลงทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกจากองค์การยูเนสโก ภายใต้ชื่อว่า "เมืองประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยและเมืองบริวาร" (Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns) เมื่อวันที่ 12 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2534
อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย ตั้งอยู่ที่อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย บริเวณที่เรียกว่า “แก่งหลวง” ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ในเขตของตำบลศรีสัชนาลัย ตำบลสารจิตร ตำบลหนองอ้อ ตำบลท่าชัย ส่วนตัวเมืองโบราณศรีสัชนาลัยอยู่ในเขตหมู่บ้านพระปรางค์ ตำบลศรีสัชนาลัย มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 45.14 ตารางกิโลเมตร มีโบราณสถานทั้งหมด 215 แห่ง สำรวจค้นพบแล้ว 204 แห่ง
