*ฝรั่งเศสแพ้เวียดนามที่เดียนเบียนฟู ลาวจึงได้รับเอกราชอย่างสมบูรณ์ใน พ.ศ.2496 โดยมีเจ้ามหาชีวิตศรีสว่างวงศ์ เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์

*ต่อมาเมื่อเจ้าสว่างวัฒนาขึ้นครองราชย์ต่อ เจ้าสุภานุวงศ์ หนึ่งในขบวนการลาวอิสระประกาศตนเป็นพวกนิยมคอมมิวนิสต์ และเป็นหัวหน้าขบวนการประเทศลาวออกเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง

*พ.ศ.2518 พรรคปฏิวัติประชาชนลาว ที่นำโดยเจ้าสุภานุวงศ์ ยึดอำนาจรัฐบาลของเจ้าสว่างวัฒนาได้สำเร็จ และประกาศสถาปนา “สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว” ขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 2 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2518
