วันเด็กแห่งชาติ มีต้นกำเนิดมาจากการที่องค์การสหประชาชาติทั่วโลกเกิดความตื่นตัว และเห็นพ้องต้องกันว่าควรจะให้ความสำคัญแก่เด็ก ๆ โดยในปี พ.ศ. 2498 นายวี เอ็ม กุล ผู้แทนองค์การสหพันธ์เพื่อสวัสดิการเด็กระหว่างประเทศ ได้เป็นผู้เสนอต่อกรมประชาสงเคราะห์ ให้มีการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติขึ้น เพื่อส่งเสริมให้ประชาชนได้เห็นความสำคัญ และความต้องการของเด็ก รวมถึงเพื่อเป็นการกระตุ้นให้เด็กตระหนักถึงบทบาทอันสำคัญของตนในประเทศ โดยปลูกฝังให้เด็กมีส่วนร่วมในสังคม เตรียมพร้อมให้ตนเองเป็นกำลังของชาติ
