ประวัติศาสตร์ลาวยุคต้น

ตามหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์เมื่อประมาณ 4,000 – 5,000 ปีก่อน กลุ่มชนที่พูดภาษาไตได้อพยพเข้ามาอยู่ในประเทศลาวและที่ราบสูงในภาคอีสาน รวมถึงพวกไท- กะได ม้ง-เมี่ยนที่เป็นบรรพบุรุษของชาวลาวลุ่ม และพวกม้ง-เย้าที่อพยพจากตอนใต้ของประเทศจีน แรกเริ่มกลุ่มชนเหล่านี้ไม่มีการตั้งหลักแหล่งที่แน่นอน ต่อมาเมื่อชนเผ่าต่างๆ ทั้งไท พม่า และเวียดนามอพยพลงมาในเขตเทือกเขาและหุบเขาของดินแดนเอเชียอาคเนย์ ซึ่งเป็นถิ่นที่อยู่ของชนชาติมอญ-เขมร ความจำเป็นในการสร้างบ้านแปงเมืองก็เริ่มมีขึ้นจนพัฒนาต่อมาเป็นเมืองเกษตรกรรม และตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่บริเวณหุบเขาและที่ราบลุ่มภายใต้อำนาจของอาณาจักรเขมร

ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.1896 พระเจ้าฟ้างุ้มทรงทำสงครามตีเอานครเวียงจันทน์หลวงพระบาง หัวเมืองพวนทั้งหมด ตลอดจนหัวเมืองอีกหลายแห่งในที่ราบสูงโคราชเข้ารวมเป็นอาณาจักรเดียวกัน ภายใต้การช่วยเหลือของกษัตริย์เขมร ก่อตั้งเป็นอาณาจักรล้านช้างขึ้นบนดินแดนที่ตั้งอยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่างลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงกับเทือกเขาอันหนำ มีศูนย์กลางอยู่ที่เมืองเชียงดง-เชียงทอง เป็นอาณาจักรที่รุ่งเรืองในทุกด้าน หลังจากสถาปนาเมืองเชียงดง-เชียงทอง แล้ว พระเจ้าฟ้างุ้มทรงรับพุทธศาสนาลัทธิลังกาวงศ์ (นิการเถรวาท) จากราชสำนักเขมรมาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติ และได้อัญเชิญพระบาง เป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปะสิงหลจากราชสำนักเขมรมายังล้านช้าง เจ้าฟ้างุ้มทรงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “เมืองหลวงพระบาง”

เมื่อพระเจ้าฟ้างุ้มสิ้นพระชนม์ พระยาสามแสนไทไตรภูวนาถ โอรสของพระเจ้าฟ้างุ้มได้ขึ้นครองราชย์ต่อ อาณาจักรล้านช้างเริ่มตกต่ำลงเพราะสงครามแย่งชิงอำนาจและเกิดกบฏต่างๆ นานนับร้อยปี จนถึง พ.ศ. 2063 พระโพธสารราชเจ้าขึ้นครองราชย์ และรวบรวมแผ่นดินขึ้นใหม่ให้เป็นปึกแผ่น และให้ย้ายเมืองหลวงของอาณาจักรล้านช้างไปอยู่ที่เมืองเวียงจันทน์ เพื่อให้ไกลจากการรุกรานของสยาม และสร้างความเจริญให้กับอาณาจักรล้านช้างเป็นอย่างมากและทรงมีสายพระเนตรยาวไกล ทรงโปรดให้พระเจ้าไชยเชษฐาธิราชพระราชโอรสไปครองอาณาจักรล้านนา เพื่อเป็นการคานอำนาจพม่า ครั้นเมื่อพระเจ้าโพธิสารราชเจ้าเสด็จสวรรคต พระเจ้าไชยเชษฐาธิราชเสด็จกลับมาล้านช้าง และทรงอัญเชิญพระแก้วมรกตจากเชียงใหม่ไปยังเวียงจันทน์ ในรัชสมัยของพระองค์พระพุทธศาสนาทรงมีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาก ทรงสร้างวัดพระธาตุหลวง หรือที่เรียกว่า “พระธาตุเจดีย์โลกจุฬามณี” และสร้างวัดพระแก้วขึ้นเพื่อประดิษฐานพระแก้วมรกต และ พระองค์มีความสัมพันธไมตรีที่แนบแน่นกับกษัตริย์ไทย โดยเฉพาะในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ พระเจ้าสุริยวงศาธรรมิกราช รัชสมัยของพระองค์นับเป็นยุคทองของราชอาณาจักรล้านช้าง ภายหลังเมื่อพระองค์สวรรคตแล้ว เชื้อพระวงศ์ลาวต่างก็แก่งแย่งราชสมบัติกัน จนอาณาจักรล้านช้างแตกแยกเป็น 3 ส่วนคือ อาณาจักรล้านช้างหลวงพระบาง อาณาจักรล้านช้างเวียงจันทน์และอาณาจักรล้านช้างจำปาศักดิ์ ต่างเป็นอิสระไม่ขึ้นแก่กัน และเพื่อชิงความเป็นใหญ่ต่างก็ขอสวามิภักดิ์ต่อเมืองเพื่อนบ้านเช่นไทย พม่า เพื่อขอกำลังมาสยบอาณาจักรลาวด้วยกัน จนถึง พ.ศ. 2322 กองทัพสยามเข้ายึดครองแผ่นดินล้านช้างที่แตกแยกออกเป็น 3 อาณาจักรได้ทั้งหมด ครั้นถึงปี พ.ศ. 2365 เจ้าอนุวงศ์แห่งเวียงจันทน์ทรงวางแผนก่อกบฏเพื่อกอบกู้เอกราช แต่ไม่สำเร็จถูกตัดสินโทษประหารชีวิต กองทัพสยามในรัชกาลที่ 3 ยกมาตีนครเวียงจันทน์ได้รื้อทำลายกำแพงเมือง เอาไฟเผาราบทั้งเมือง

สงครามเจ้าอนุวงศ์
พ.ศ. 2369 อาณาจักรล้านช้างเวียงจันทน์มีพระเจ้าอนุวงศ์เป็นกษัตริย์ ได้รับราชการกับพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยแห่งกรุงสยามมีความชอบมาก จึงประทานเมืองจำปาสักให้เจ้าราชบุตรโย้ ราชโอรสของเจ้าอนุวงศ์ปกครอง ต่อมาเมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยเสด็จสวรรคต พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จขึ้นเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์รัชกาลต่อมา เจ้าอนุวงศ์เห็นว่าเป็นช่วงเปลี่ยนแผ่นดินจึงคิดแยกตัวเป็นอิสระไม่ขึ้นกับไทยอีกต่อไป จึงระดมกำลังรวมกับเจ้าราชบุตรโย้ซึ่งครองจำปาสักยกทัพมาตีสยามทางด้านภาคอีสานของไทยในปัจจุบัน พร้อมทั้งแสวงหาพันธมิตรจากหลวงพระบางและหัวเมืองล้านนาแต่ก็ไม่ได้รับการตอบสนอง เนื่องจากหัวเมืองดังกล่าวฝักใฝ่กับฝ่ายไทยมากกว่า เมื่อกองทัพของเจ้าอนุวงศ์ยกทัพมาถึงเมืองนครราชสีมาเห็นจะทำการไม่สำเร็จจึงตัดสินใจเผาเมืองนครราชสีมาทิ้งและกวาดต้อนเชลยตามรายทางกลับไปเวียงจันทน์ ระหว่างทางเชลยที่ถูกกวาดต้อนก็ได้ลุกขึ้นต่อสู้กองทัพลาวที่ทุ่งสำริดจนเสียกำลังทหารลาวส่วนหนึ่งด้วย ด้านฝ่ายไทยซึ่งทราบข่าวค่อนข้างช้าก็ได้ส่งกองทัพภายใต้การนำของกรมพระราชวังบวรมหาศักดิพลเสพย์และเจ้าพระยาบดินทรเดชา (สิงห์ สิงหเสนี) ขึ้นมาปราบปราม กองทัพเจ้าอนุวงศ์สู้ไม่ได้จึงแตกพ่าย ตัวเจ้าอนุวงศ์และราชวงศ์เชื้อสายก็ต้องหนีภัยไปพึ่งจักรวรรดิเวียดนาม ฝ่ายสยามจึงยึดกรุงเวียงจันทน์ไว้โดยยังมิได้ทำลายเมืองลงแต่อย่างใด และได้แต่งตั้งกองทหารจำนวนหนึ่งรักษาเมืองไว้เท่านั้น

ในปี พ.ศ. 2371 เจ้าอนุวงศ์ได้กลับมายังกรุงเวียงจันทน์โดยมากับขบวนราชทูตเวียดนามพามาเพื่อขอสวามิภักดิ์สยามอีกครั้ง แต่พอสบโอกาสเจ้าอนุวงศ์จึงนำทหารของตนฆ่าทหารไทยที่รักษาเมืองจนเกือบทั้งหมดและยึดกรุงเวียงจันทน์คืน กองทัพสยามจึงถอนกำลังเพื่อรวบรวมกำลังพลและยกทัพมาปราบปรามเจ้าอนุวงศ์อีกครั้ง ฝ่ายเจ้าอนุวงศ์เมื่อสู้กองทัพไทยไม่ได้จึงไปหลบภัยที่เมืองพวน (แขวงเชียงขวางในปัจจุบัน) แต่เจ้าน้อยเมืองพวนกลับจับตัวเจ้าอนุวงศ์และพระราชวงศ์ที่เหลืออยู่ส่งลงมากรุงเทพ พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระพิโรธเจ้าอนุวงศ์มากจึงทรงให้คุมขังเจ้าอนุวงศ์ประจานกลางพระนครจนสิ้นพระชนม์ ส่วนกรุงเวียงจันทน์ก็ทรงมีพระบรมราชโองการให้ทำลายจนไม่เหลือสภาพความเป็นเมือง และตั้งศูนย์กลางการปกครองฝ่ายไทยเพื่อดูแลอาณาเขตของอาณาจักรเวียงจันทน์ที่เมืองหนองคายแทน เมืองเวียงจันทน์ที่ถูกทำลายลงในครั้งนั้นมีเพียงแค่หอพระแก้วและวัดสีสะเกดเท่านั้นที่ยังคงสภาพสมบูรณ์มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
