เนื่องด้วยสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ทรงประจักษ์ว่า เด็กนักเรียนในถิ่นทุรกันดาร ในโรงเรียนตำรวจตระเวนชายแดน เมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ ๖ แล้ว ส่วนใหญ่ไม่มีโอกาสศึกษาต่อในระดับสูงได้ เนื่องจากทางบ้านมีฐานะยากจน และตามชายแดนมักไม่มีโรงเรียนที่เปิดสอนในระดับสูง จึงมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะพระราชทานพระราชานุเคราะห์ให้นักเรียนเหล่านั้นได้มีโอกาสศึกษาต่อตามความเหมาะสมของระดับสติปัญญา และความสามารถของแต่ละบุคคล เมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาจะได้นำความรู้ ที่ได้รับกลับไปพัฒนาชุมชนของตนเองต่อไป จึงทำให้เกิดโครงการนักเรียนในพระราชานุเคราะห์ และทุนพระราชทานเพื่อการศึกษา ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.๒๕๓๑ เป็นต้นมา ในส่วนการดำเนินกิจกรรมงานนักเรียนในพระราชานุเคราะห์ฯ ดำเนินงานทั้งในด้านการปรับปรุงพัฒนาคุณภาพการศึกษาให้แก่นักเรียน ด้วยการฝึกอบรมให้ความรู้ทางวิชาการ แนะแนวทางการศึกษา และวางแผนการศึกษาในอนาคตให้แก่นักเรียน การปลูกฝังและเสริมสร้างจิตสำนึกในความเป็นไทย ให้มีความรักในถิ่นที่อยู่ และการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข รวมทั้งการติดตามดูแล ให้คำปรึกษาและช่วยเหลือนักเรียนทั้งในด้านการเรียน ความประพฤติ และการใช้จ่ายเงินพระราชทาน ตลอดจนส่งเสริมให้นักเรียนมีงานทำตามคุณวุฒิของนักเรียน นอกจากนี้ ยังมีนักเรียนในพระราชานุเคราะห์ฯ ซึ่งภายหลังจบการศึกษาแล้วได้กลับไปประกอบอาชีพในชุมชนบ้านเกิด และมีส่วนร่วมในการพัฒนาท้องถิ่นและชุมชนของพวกเขาให้ดียิ่งขึ้นต่อไปด้วย
