ประวัติ

กรุงเนปยีดอเป็นเมืองหลวงใหม่ของประเทศพม่า โดย พลเอกอาวุโสตาน ฉ่วยเป็นผู้ริเริ่มความคิดที่จะย้ายเมืองหลวงจากนครย่างกุ้งมายังสถานที่แห่งใหม่ด้วยเหตุผลเพื่อความสะดวกในการบริหารงาน เนื่องจากตำแหน่งที่ตั้งของกรุงเนปยีดอนั้นตั้งอยู่กลางประเทศพอดี และได้เริ่มสร้างเมืองหลวงแห่งใหม่นี้ในปี พ.ศ. 2545 โดยกระทรวงกลาโหมพม่าได้ว่าจ้างผู้รับเหมาก่อสร้าง 25 บริษัทมาก่อสร้างสิ่งก่อสร้างและสาธารณูปโภคต่างๆ จนเมื่อวันที่ 27 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2549 ก็ได้มีการเฉลิมฉลองเมืองหลวงแห่งใหม่และได้ตั้งชื่อทางการของเมืองว่า "เนปยีดอ" นับแต่นั้นมา
