ปทุมธานี เดิมชื่อ “เมืองสามโคก” เป็นเมืองที่ตั้งมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาในแผ่นดินของสมเด็จพระเจ้า ปราสาททอง เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2175 มาในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ครอบครัวมอญที่ถูกอพยพต้อนมาจากเมืองเมาะตะมะ ไปทำมาหากินที่บ้านสามโคกนี้ใกล้กับวัดสิงห์ เขตอำเภอสามโคกปัจจุบัน ในปัจจุบันยังมีโคกดินโบราณสำหรับเผาโอ่ง อ่างของชาวมอญในสมัยโบราณเหลืออยู่เพียง 2 โคก การอพยพชาวมอญมาอยู่ที่เมืองนี้ยังมีในสมัยของสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี (พ.ศ. 2317) และพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย (พ.ศ. 2358) ในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยนั้น พระองค์ได้เสด็จประพาสเมืองสามโคก ได้มีพสกนิกรจำนวนมากสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ นำดอกบัวหลวงขึ้นทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายอย่างเนืองแน่น จึงได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานนามเมืองใหม่เพื่อให้เป็นสิริมงคลว่า “ประทุมธานี” และต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเปลี่ยนการสะกดนามจังหวัดเป็น “ปทุมธานี”
