คำว่า การท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ เป็นศั

คำว่า การท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ เป็นศัพท์บัญญัติที่การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) นำมาใช้อย่างเป็นทางการใน พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๑ โดยให้มีความหมายตรงกับคำว่า Ecotourism ในภาษาอังกฤษ ศัพท์บัญญัตินี้ได้รับความเห็นชอบจากราชบัณฑิตยสถาน ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการบัญญัติศัพท์แล้ว
Ecotourism เป็นคำที่เกิดใหม่ในวงการ อุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยว โดยนำคำ ๒ คำมารวมกัน ได้แก่ eco และ tourism คำว่า eco แปลตามรูปศัพท์ว่า บ้านหรือที่อยู่อาศัย ส่วน tourism แปลว่า การท่องเที่ยว ecotourism จึงแปลว่า การท่องเที่ยวเกี่ยวกับที่อยู่อาศัย หมายความถึง การท่องเที่ยวที่เน้นในด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมอันเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสิ่งมีชีวิตต่างๆ ทั้งพืช สัตว์ และมนุษย์
ส่วนคำว่า นิเวศ ซึ่งเป็นคำภาษาสันสกฤตที่นำมาใช้ในภาษาไทย ก็แปลว่า บ้านหรือที่อยู่อาศัยเช่นกัน (ดูพจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน) ฉะนั้น การท่องเที่ยว เชิงนิเวศจึงเป็นศัพท์บัญญัติที่มีความหมายตรงกับคำในภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเหมาะสม
นอกจากคำว่า ecotourism แล้ว ยังมีคำอื่นๆที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงหรือเกี่ยวข้อง กันอีกหลายคำ ได้แก่ green tourism แปลว่า การท่องเที่ยวสีเขียว หมายถึง การท่องเที่ยวสถานที่ทางธรรมชาติ โดยสีเขียวเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความอุดมสมบูรณ์ทางธรรมชาติ biotourism แปลว่า การท่องเที่ยวเชิงชีวภาพ ซึ่งหมายถึง การท่องเที่ยวที่เน้นการศึกษาสิ่งมีชีวิตตามธรรมชาติ และ agrotourism แปลว่า การท่องเที่ยวเชิงเกษตร เป็นการท่องเที่ยวที่เน้นในด้านเกษตรกรรม เพื่อให้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติของพืชผลไร่นา และวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของเกษตรกร
เพื่อขยายความหมายของการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศให้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น จะขอกล่าวถึงคำนิยามที่นักวิชาการได้ให้ไว้ในที่ต่างๆ ดังนี้
๑. องค์การสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งสหประชาชาติ (United Nations Environment Programme - UNEP) สมาคมการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ (Ecotourism Society) และองค์การ การท่องเที่ยวโลก (World Tourism Organi- zation) ให้คำนิยามว่า "การท่องเที่ยวที่ไม่เป็นการรบกวนลักษณะทางธรรมชาติ มุ่งหวังในด้านการศึกษา มีความพอใจต่อทัศนียภาพ พืชพรรณ และสัตว์ตามธรรมชาติ มีความเข้าใจต่อวัฒนธรรม ประวัติความเป็นมาของสิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ โดยไม่เป็นการรบกวนต่อระบบนิเวศ ในขณะเดียวกันก็สร้างโอกาสทางเศรษฐกิจ ที่จะทำ ให้เกิดการอนุรักษ์ต่อทรัพยากรของประชากร ในท้องถิ่น" (สุมาลี เทพสุวรรณ, ๒๕๔๔ : หน้า ๓๙)
๒. ดร. ราลฟ์ บักลีย์ (Dr. Ralph Buckley) ศาสตราจารย์ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์วิจัย การท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ มหาวิทยาลัยกริฟฟิท ประเทศออสเตรเลีย ให้คำนิยามสั้นๆว่า "การท่องเที่ยวที่อาศัยผลิตผลทางธรรมชาติ การจัดการที่ยั่งยืน และองค์ประกอบทาง การศึกษา ซึ่งมีส่วนก่อให้เกิดการอนุรักษ์" (Buckley, Ralph 1995 : p. 3)
๓. การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย ให้คำนิยามว่า"การเดินทางไปยังสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวแห่งใดแห่งหนึ่ง โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อการศึกษา ชื่นชม และเพลิดเพลินไปกับทัศนียภาพธรรมชาติ สภาพสังคม วัฒนธรรม และชีวิตของคนในท้องถิ่น บนพื้นฐานความรู้และความรับผิดชอบต่อระบบนิเวศ
