พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้พระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ พระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตให้ยกวัดช่องลมเป็นพระอารามหลวง เมื่อวันพุธที่ 26 พฤษภาคม 2508 และถัดจากนั้นเป็นเวลาอีก 5 เดือนเต็ม ก็ได้ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินพร้อมด้วยสมเด็จพระนางเจ้า ฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถและสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอเจ้าฟ้าชาย พระเจ้าลูกเธอเจ้าฟ้าหญิงทุกพระองค์ มาทรงบำเพ็ญพระ-ราชกุศลถวายผ้าพระกฐิน ณ วัดช่องลมเมื่อวันที่26 ตุลาคม 2508 นั้นนับเป็นพระมหากรุณาธิคุณพระเมตตาบารมีล้นกล้า ฯ ของเหล่าพศกนิกรอย่างถ้วนหน้า
