ประเภทของยาเภสัช
วัตถุในพระราชบัญญัติยาฉบับที่ 3 ปีพุทธศักราช 2522 ได้แบ่งยาที่ได้จากเภสัชวัตถุนี้ไว้เป็น 2 ประเภทคือ ยาแผนโบราณ หมายถึง ยาที่ใช้ในการประกอบโรคศิลปะแผนโบราณหรือในการบำบัดโรคของสัตว์ ซึ่งมีปรากฏอยู่ในตำรายาแผนโบราณที่รัฐมนตรีประกาศ หรือยาที่รัฐมนตรีประกาศให้เป็นยาแผนโบราณ หรือได้รับอนุญาตให้ขึ้นทะเบียนตำรับยาเป็นยาแผนโบราณ
ยาสมุนไพร หมายถึงยาที่ได้จากพืชสัตว์แร่ธาตุที่ยังมิได้ผสมปรุงหรือแปรสภาพสมุนไพรนอกจากจะใช้เป็นยาแล้ว ยังใช้ประโยชน์เป็นอาหาร ใช้เตรียมเป็นเครื่องดื่ม ใช้เป็นอาหารเสริม เป็นส่วนประกอบในเครื่องสำอาง ใช้แต่งกลิ่น แต่งสีอาหารและยา ตลอดจนใช้เป็นยาฆ่าแมลงอีกด้วย ในทางตรงกันข้าม มีสมุนไพรจำนวนไม่น้อยที่มีพิษ ถ้าใช้ไม่ถูกวิธีหรือใช้เกินขนาดจะมีพิษถึงตายได้ ดังนั้นการใช้สมุนไพรจึงควรใช้ด้วยความระมัดระวังและใช้อย่างถูกต้อง ปัจจุบันมีการตื่นตัวในการนำสมุนไพรมาใช้พัฒนาประเทศมากขึ้น
