มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร เดิมคือ โรงเรียนปราณีตศิลปกรรม สังกัดกรมศิลปากร ท่านศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี (เดิมชื่อ Corrado Feroci) ชาวอิตาเลียน ซึ่งเดินทางมารับราชการในประเทศไทย ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ร่วมกับคุณพระสาโรช รัชตมินมานก์ (สาโรช สุขยางค์) ท่านทั้งสองได้ก่อตั้งโรงเรียนปราณีตศิลปกรรมขึ้นในปีพ.ศ. 2476 ใช้พื้นที่วังกลาง และวังตะวันออก หน้าพระบรมมหาราชวังเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนแห่งนี้ เปิดสอนให้แก่ข้าราชการและนักเรียนในสมัยนั้นโดยไม่เก็บค่าเล่าเรียน ต่อมาปีพ.ศ. 2478 ได้รวมเอาโรงเรียนนาฏยดุริยางคศาสตร์ ที่ตั้งอยู่วังหน้าไว้ด้วย และเปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่ว่า “โรงเรียนศิลปากร”
