เมื่อวันที่ ๓๑ ตุลาคม ๒๕๓๒ คณะรัฐมนตรี โดย พล.อ.ชาติชาย ชุณหะวัณ เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีมติเห็นชอบและอนุมัติให้วันที่ ๑๔ เมษายนของทุกปีเป็นวันแห่งครอบครัว ซึ่งอยู่ในช่วงเทศกาลสงกรานต์ เป็นวันที่ต้องการให้ประชาชนได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของครอบครัวให้มากขึ้น ในระยะนี้ ประชาชนส่วนใหญ่จะเดินทางกลับสู่ภูมิลำเนา จึงทำให้สมาชิกในครอบครัวมีโอกาสพบปะกันได้โดยสะดวก
การกำหนดให้วันที่ ๑๔ เมษายน ของทุกปีเป็น วันครอบครัว ก็เพื่อมุ่งหวังให้มีการฟื้นฟูขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีแต่ดั้งเดิม ซึ่งได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามสถานการณ์ของเศรษฐกิจบ้านเมือง เป็นวันที่ควรทำพิธีรดน้ำดำหัว ขอพร ผู้หลักผู้ใหญ่ โดยเฉพาะ พ่อ แม่ ปู่ ย่า ตา ยาย ครูบาอาจารย์ ผู้ที่เคารพนับถือ ทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้กับบุพการี เพื่อเสริมสร้างความเป็นสิริมงคล และเพื่อความอบอุ่น เป็นสุขของครอบครัว ตามประเพณีไทยที่เคยปฏิบัติกันมา เราควรทำเป็นตัวอย่างให้ลูกหลานได้เห็น เพื่อให้เขาได้ซึมซับวัฒนธรรมที่ดี และส่งต่อถ่ายทอดไปสู่รุ่นถัดไป
