1.ความสำคัญและที่มา
ปัจจุบันการขนส่งถือเป็นส่วนสำคัญในการดำเนินงานด้านต่างๆทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน การขนส่งเข้ามามีบทบาทเป็นอย่างมากในธุรกิจในยุคนี้ทำให้เกิดการแข่งขันกันเป็นอย่างมาก และการขนส่งมีหลายประเภท เช่น การขนส่งทางถนน การขนส่งทางรถไฟ การขนส่งทางเรือ การขนส่งทางอากาศ การขนส่งทางท่อ เป็นต้น โดยที่รูปแบบการขนส่งที่มีสัดส่วนสูงที่สุดคือ การขนส่งทางถนนซึ่งคิดเป็น 82.47% ของปริมาณการขนส่งโดยรวมของประเทศ
ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้มีการก่อตั้งบริษัทที่ดำเนินธุรกิจด้านการขนส่งเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆทำให้เกิดการแข่งขันมีความเข้มข้นมากขึ้นและอีกทั้งยังมีต้นทุนด้านพลังงานเชื้อเพลิงเป็นต้นทุนสำคัญในการขนส่ง ซึ่งมีแนวโน้มที่สูงขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ส่งผลให้บริษัทขนส่งสินค้ามีความจำเป็นต้องวางแผนการขนส่งที่เหมาะสม เพื่อสามารถลดระยะทางในการขนส่งและลดจำนวนรอบในการวิ่งส่งสินค้าให้น้อยลง ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ต้นทุนในการขนส่งสินค้าลดลงและเพิ่มความสามารถในการแข่งขันให้สูงขึ้นโดยมีการพัฒนาระบบหรือรูปแบบที่ทันสมัย มีการนำเทคโนโลยีเทคนิคต่างๆเข้ามาใช้ในการขนส่งเพื่อให้ตรงตามความต้องการผู้ใช้บริการในปัจจุบัน
การขนส่งมวลชนมีความสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาประเทศอย่างยิ่งทั้งในด้านเศรษฐกิจและสังคม โดยเฉพาะการลดค่าครองชีพของประชาชน นอกจากนี้การมีระบบขนส่งมวลชนที่ดีมีรูปแบบการเดินทางที่หลากหลาย สะดวก และมีราคาที่เหมาะสม ยังมีส่วนช่วยในการตัดสินใจเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยวยังประเทศไทยของนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติอีกด้วย ซึ่งก็จะส่งผลให้อุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยวของประเทศไทยเติบโตมากขึ้นโดยการขนส่งมวลชนของประเทศไทยนั้นมีหลากหลายรูปแบบทั้งทางบกทางน้ำ และทางอากาศแต่ในปัจจุบันการขนส่งมวลชนทางบกนับเป็นรูปแบบการขนส่งมวลชนที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุด ซึ่งในปัจจุบันหน่วยงานภาครัฐก็ได้พยายามพัฒนาระบบขนส่งมวลชนโดยนำเทคโนโลยีต่างๆ มาใช้ในการบริหารระบบขนส่งมวลชนทางบก ดังเช่นประเทศสิงคโปร์ที่นับเป็นประเทศต้นแบบในภูมิภาคเอเชีย ที่มีการบริหารจัดการระบบขนส่งมวลชนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
