ปี 2558 ประเทศไทยจะต้องเปิดประเทศเข้าสู่ “ประชาคมอาเซียน” ซึ่งในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (ASEAN) มีอยู่ทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศ ได้แก่ บรูไน กัมพูชา อินโดนีเซีย ลาว มาเลเซีย พม่า ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ ไทย และเวียตนาม
ในฐานะที่ประเทศไทยเป็นหนึ่งในสมาชิกก่อตั้งอาเซียน รัฐบาลไทยได้ให้ความสำคัญในการเตรียมความพร้อมของประเทศเพื่อร่วมผลักดันให้เกิดการสร้างประชาคมอาเซียนภายในปี 2558 เพื่อผลประโยชน์ของประชาชนใน โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อนำประเทศไทยไปสู่การเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนที่สมบรูณ์ โดยสร้างความพร้อมและความเข้มแข็งทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม และการเมืองและความมั่นคง โดยที่ประชาคมอาเซียนทั้งสามเสาหลักมีความสำคัญเท่าเทียมกัน ในการดำเนินการเพื่อก้าวไปสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน และได้มีการจัดทำแผนงานแห่งชาติสำหรับการก้าวไปสู่การเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนด้วย
