ประวัติความเป็นมา
สะพานนี้เกิดจากพระมหากรุณาธิคุณในพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อวันที่ ๑๕ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๘ พระองค์มีพระราชดำริให้กรุงเทพมหานครก่อสร้างสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาเพิ่มอีก ๑ แห่ง เพื่อบรรเทาการจราจรบนสะพานสมเด็จพระปิ่นเกล้ารองรับการเดินทางเชื่อมต่อระหว่างฝั่งพระนครกับฝั่งธนบุรี และเป็นจุดเชื่อมต่อโครงการพระราชดำริตามแนวจตุรทิศ
สะพานพระราม ๘ จะช่วยเชื่อมการเดินทางระหว่างฝั่งพระนครกับฝั่งธนบุรีให้สะดวกสบายขึ้น ซึ่งจะช่วยระบายรถบนสะพานสมเด็จพระปิ่นเกล้าได้ถึง ๓๐% และบนสะพานกรุงธน อีก ๒๐% และยังสามารถลดมลพิษทางอากาศบริเวณในเมือง โดยเริ่มเปิดให้ใช้ตั้งแต่วันที่ ๗ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๕ เวลา ๗.๐๐ น.
ลักษณะโดยทั่วไป
สะพานพระราม ๘ มีความยาวรวม ๔๗๕ เมตร สูงเท่าสะพานสมเด็จพระปิ่นเกล้า และความลาดชันไม่เกิน ๓% เป็นสะพานหลักช่วงข้ามแม่น้ำ ๓๐๐ เมตร สะพานยึดช่วงบนบก ๑๐๐ เมตร และสะพานช่วงโครงสร้างยึดเสา ๗๕ เมตรมีรูปแบบโดดเด่นสวยงามเพราะได้ออกแบบเป็นสะพานขึงแบบอสมมาตรซึ่งหมายความว่ามีเสาสะพานหลักเสาเดียวบนฝั่งธนบุรี และมีเสารับน้ำหนัก ๑ ต้นบนฝั่งพระนคร จึงไม่มีเสารับน้ำหนักตั้งอยู่ในแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ทำให้ไม่มีปัญหาต่อการสัญจรทางน้ำ ช่วยป้องกันน้ำท่วมและระบบนิเวศวิทยาในน้ำ รวมทั้งไม่กระทบต่อการจัดตั้งขบวนเรือพระราชพิธี
