อภิรดีและคณะ (2554) ทำการวิจัยเรื่องการประเมินศักยภาพในการจัดการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศโดยชุมชน: กรณีศึกษาถ้ำภูผาเพชร และถ้ำเจ็ดคต ตำบลปาล์มพัฒนา อำเภอมะนัง จังหวัดสตูล ผลจากการประเมินพบว่า ส่วนใหญ่มีความสอดคล้องกัน ซึ่งได้มาจากแบบประเมินศักยภาพในการจัดการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศที่ออกแบบเฉพาะเจาะจงสำหรับพื้นที่ศึกษา ได้ผลจากการประเมินศักยภาพอยู่ในระดับสูง รวมถึงมาจากแบบประเมินมาตรฐานคุณภาพแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ พบว่ามีมาตรฐานคุณภาพอยู่ในระดับดี แบบประเมินมาตรฐานคุณภาพแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติ มีมาตรฐานคุณภาพอยู่ในระดับดีมาก และจากแบบประเมินมาตรฐานกิจกรรมล่องแก่ง พบว่ามีมาตรฐานอยู่ในระดับสามดาว แนวทางการพัฒนาศักยภาพจากการจัดประชุม สรุปผลได้ว่ามีประเด็นในการกำหนดแนวทางพัฒนาศักยภาพ 15 ประเด็น โดยมีประเด็นที่กำหนดแนวทางให้ชุมชนนร่วมมือกับองค์กร ผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียกลุ่มต่างๆ 6 ประเด็น ได้แก่ ความสามารถในการรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงต่อระบบนิเวศและวัฒนธรรม การจัดการขยะ ประโยชน์ต่อชุมชนด้านการอนุรักษ์ ประโยชน์ต่อชุมชนด้านเศรษฐกิจ และการจัดการด้านการติดตามและการประเมินการเปลี่ยนแปลงของพื้นที่ ส่วนอีก 9 ประเด็นเป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาศักยภาพที่เสนอต่อองค์กร ผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียกลุ่มต่างๆ ให้เป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาศักยภาพให้มีศักยภาพที่ดียิ่งขึ้น
