สมัยปัจจุบัน เริ่มเมื่อปี พ . ศ .2445 เมืองภูเวียง ได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้เป็นอำเภอ โดยมีพระประสิทธิ์สรรพากร 
( สีหะไกร ) เป็นนายอำเภอคนแรก ขณะนั้นอำเภอภูเวียง ตั้งอยู่ในหุบเขาภูเวียง ต่อมาปี พ . ศ .2491 ทางราชการเห็นว่าที่ตั้งของอำเภออยู่ในวงล้อมของภูเขา มีเส้นทางเข้า - ออก ได้ทางเดียว ประชาชนมาติดต่อราชการได้ยากลำบาก จึงได้ย้ายมาตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านนาก้านเหลือง ตำบลบ้านเรือ 
( ปัจจุบันเปลี่ยนเป็นตำบลภูเวียง )

เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2549 ได้มีพระราชกฤษีกาแบ่งเขตการปกครองจัดตั้ง กิ่ง อ.ภูเวียง (ปัจจุบันเป็น อ.เวียงเก่า)
โดยแบ่งเขตการปกครองออกจาก อ.ภูเวียง
จำนวน 3 ตำบล ได้แก่ ต.เมืองเก่าพัฒนา ต.ในเมือง และต.เข้าน้อย ซึ่งมีหมู่บ้านรวม 36 หมู่บ้าน พื้นที่ 286 ตร.กม. 
ทำให้พื้นที่ของอำเภอภูเวียงคงเหลือ 11 ตำบล 114 หมู่บ้าาน พื้นที่ประมาณ 717 ตร.กม.
